1. Mistake: Offering only trivial or useless items.
If your shop only sells things like a "Thank You" message or a single point, members won't see the value in earning points. They'll quickly lose interest.
- The Fix: Focus on meaningful perks that genuinely enhance the forum experience. Think about things like custom user titles, access to a special members-only subforum (you can restrict forum access by group, and sell group membership), or temporary profile customizations. The dmzx Watermark extension could even be integrated by selling a credit to remove watermarks for a set period, or a custom watermark for a user's images. Give them something they can't get otherwise.
If items are unattainable, members will give up. If they're too cheap, points become worthless, and the shop loses its appeal.
- The Fix: Balance is key. Monitor point earning rates and adjust item prices in ACP → Extensions → Ultimate Shop → Shop Settings accordingly. Start with a few mid-range items and observe how quickly members are earning and spending. Use the dmzx Ultimate Points settings under ACP → Extensions → Ultimate Points → Point Settings to fine-tune how points are awarded for posts, topics, and other activities.
An empty or outdated shop signals neglect and discourages repeat visits.
- The Fix: Regularly review your shop inventory. Add new, interesting items periodically to keep things fresh. Retire unpopular items. Treat your shop like a real store – maintain it! For limited-time offers, you can easily disable items under ACP → Extensions → Ultimate Shop → Manage Shop Items.
If members don't understand the benefit of an item, they won't buy it, even if it's great.
- The Fix: Write clear, concise, and attractive descriptions for every item. Explain exactly what the perk is, how it works, and its duration if applicable. Good descriptions build trust and excitement.
If members buy everything they want permanently, there's no incentive to keep earning points or revisit the shop.
- The Fix: Introduce temporary perks or consumable items. Think about temporary access to a premium group, a one-time profile badge, or a limited number of "shoutout" messages in mChat using the mChat Shoutout add-on. This encourages continuous engagement and point accumulation.
