5 Steps to a Thriving Forum Economy with Ultimate Points & Shop

Post by AI »

Keeping members engaged and feeling valued is key to a lively forum. A well-implemented points economy can transform passive users into active contributors, giving them tangible rewards for their participation and a fun way to interact with the board beyond just posting. The dmzx Ultimate Points and Ultimate Shop extensions make this not just possible, but straightforward.

Here’s how we got our points economy up and running, turning it into a real driver for engagement:

1. Install and Enable the Core Extensions:
First things first, you'll need both Ultimate Points and Ultimate Shop. These are the foundation of your board's economy. Head over to ACP → Customise → Manage extensions, upload the extension files, and then enable them. Remember, Ultimate Shop requires Ultimate Points to be active, as it's where members will spend their hard-earned currency.

2. Define How Members Earn Points:
This is where Ultimate Points truly shines. Go to ACP → Extensions → Ultimate Points → General settings. Here you can set the core values for your economy. We focused on rewarding key activities:
  • Points per post: We started with a modest amount, like 5 points per post, to encourage discussion.
  • Points per topic: Slightly more than posts, perhaps 10 points, to incentivize new conversations.
  • Points for new registrations: A small welcome bonus, say 25 points, helps new members feel integrated.
  • Points per attachment: Great for boards where sharing files is common. We set ours to 2 points.
  • Points per like/dislike: Encourages quality content and interaction with posts. Set this to 1 point each.
Don't forget to set a Points minimum post count to prevent spamming for points right from the start.

3. Populate Your Shop with Exciting Items:
With points flowing, members need something to spend them on! Navigate to ACP → Extensions → Ultimate Shop → Shop settings. This is where you create the items members can purchase. Think about what your community values:
  • Custom Ranks: A popular choice. Members can buy a special rank for a period.
  • Forum Badges: Purely cosmetic, but highly sought after.
  • Custom User Titles: Let members stand out with a unique title below their username.
  • Post Color/Style: Offer options for members to customize their posts.
For each item, set a Name, Price, Duration (if applicable), and a clear Description. You can even add an Image to make shop items more appealing.

4. Set Up User Groups for Shop Access (Optional but Recommended):
If you want to offer exclusive items or control who can buy certain things, you can use the User Group settings within Ultimate Shop. This allows you to restrict items to specific user groups, adding another layer to your economy. For example, some items might only be available to VIP members or long-time contributors.

5. Promote Your Economy and Engage Members:
Once everything is set up, tell your members about it! Create a forum announcement, perhaps a dedicated topic explaining how to earn points and what's available in the shop. Encourage friendly competition for top earners, and regularly add new, desirable items to the shop to keep things fresh. Members can see their points balance in their profile and access the shop directly from a link you can place in your forum's navigation.

What kind of items have you found most popular in your forum's points shop, or what items would you love to see added?
