One of the most common requests we get from forum members is for a dedicated place to share files—be it custom styles, tutorials, or user-created content. While attaching files to posts works for small things, it quickly becomes unwieldy for a proper library. That's where the dmzx Download System extension comes in, and setting it up correctly from the start makes all the difference.

I recently streamlined our own download section, and here's how I tackled the initial setup to ensure it was organized, secure, and user-friendly:

• Creating Categories:
  The first step is structure. Head over to ACP → Extensions → Download System / Manage Categories. This is where you'll define your main categories and any subcategories. I started with broad categories like "Styles & Themes" and "Tools & Utilities," then added specific subcategories under them (e.g., "Styles for 3.3.x" under "Styles & Themes").
  • Click Add a new category.
  • Give it a Category name and a good Description of the category.
  • If it's a subcategory, select its Parent category. This keeps everything tidy.
  Remember to enable Allow category images in ACP → Extensions → Download System / Configuration if you want to make your categories visually appealing.
• Setting Permissions (Implicitly):
  The Download System handles permissions largely through category visibility. Under ACP → Extensions → Download System / Manage Categories, when you edit a category, you'll see the Show on index upload option. This is crucial. If a group isn't allowed to upload in a specific category, they won't see it in their upload section. Admins, of course, can always see everything. This is a simple but effective way to control who can add content to which part of your download section.
• Announcing New Downloads:
  Getting the word out about new content is key to engagement. The Announce new downloads feature in ACP → Extensions → Download System / Configuration / Announcement settings is a lifesaver. I set an Announcement forum ID (a specific forum where all new downloads get an automatic topic), and also enabled Lock announcement to keep those threads clean and focused on the announcement itself. There's also an Announce download again option, which is great for updated files.
• Configuration Tweaks:
  Don't forget the small but important details in ACP → Extensions → Download System / Configuration. I adjusted Set number of pagination on category page and Set number of pagination on downloads page to suit our content volume, and made sure Allow BBCodes, Allow smilies, and Allow links were enabled for richer descriptions.

With these steps, our download section transformed from a messy collection of attachments into an organized, easily navigable resource. Members know exactly where to find what they need, and the automatic announcements keep them informed about fresh content.
