Running a thriving phpBB board isn't just about moderation and content; it also involves covering the costs of hosting, domain names, and sometimes even premium extensions. While advertising can help, it often doesn't cover everything and can detract from the user experience. That's where a well-implemented donation system becomes invaluable for a forum admin.

For a long time, we relied on a simple PayPal button, but it lacked integration and felt a bit clunky. Members had to manually specify amounts, and tracking was a chore. We needed something more robust, and the dmzx Donation extension was the perfect fit to streamline our fundraising efforts.

Here’s how we set it up and what made a real difference:

• Enabling the Extension: First things first, we installed the Donation extension via ACP → Customise → Manage extensions. Once enabled, all the settings are conveniently located under ACP → Extensions → Donation Extension.
• Multiple Payment Options: We know not everyone uses PayPal, so we enabled both PayPal donations and Stripe donations under the Configuration tab. This was a game-changer for user convenience. Setting up the API keys and webhook URLs (found right there in the ACP, with clear instructions) was straightforward.
• Setting a Goal: We wanted our members to see where their contributions were going. By enabling the Donation goal under Donation goal settings and setting a clear Donation goal amount, our members could see our progress towards covering server costs. We chose to Display the donation goal on board index at the Top to keep it visible.
• Rewarding Donors (Cosmetic Badges): A small thank you goes a long way. We enabled Show donor badge next to username and selected Icon + custom label for the Badge style. Then, we set up Tier badge labels like "Supporter" for small donations and "Patron" for larger ones. This gives a nice, visible recognition to those who contribute, without affecting their user group permissions.
• The "Next Tier" Prompt: This clever feature, Show "next tier" prompt on donation page, shows logged-in donors how much more they need to give to reach the next badge tier. It even pre-fills that amount with a single click, making it incredibly easy for them to increase their contribution if they wish.
• Minimum Donation Amounts: To avoid excessive micro-transactions, we set a PayPal minimum donation amount and a minimum donation amount for Mollie under their respective settings. This helps manage transaction fees.

The transformation was immediate. Our donation page looked professional, offered flexible payment options, and the goal progress encouraged more contributions. The donor badges became a point of pride for our members. We found that being transparent about our needs and making the donation process easy and rewarding significantly increased the support we received.
