I'm a firm believer that the more insight you have into real-time user presence, the better you can cultivate a dynamic environment. That's why I think the dmzx Who Is Where and dmzx Who Visited This Topic extensions are essential tools for any phpBB 4.0.x board. They go beyond simple 'online users' lists and provide actionable intelligence.
Why these extensions are a game-changer:
- Real-time Buzz with Who Is Where: The Who Is Where extension, visible right on your index page, shows exactly what members, guests, and even bots are doing right now. Are they viewing the team page? Composing a private message? Reading a specific forum? This immediate feedback makes your board feel more alive and can encourage others to explore or join in. I've found it particularly useful for:
- Spotting active discussions: If multiple users are in the same topic, it's a clear signal that something interesting is happening.
- Identifying new users needing help: Seeing someone stuck on a UCP page might prompt you to reach out.
- Optimizing visibility: By enabling Show topic name in Who is where (via ACP → Extensions → Who is Where / Settings), you give a much clearer picture than just the forum name, which is invaluable.
- Performance: The Limit who is where on index setting is great for larger boards to keep things snappy, and the Refresh interval (default 5 seconds) keeps the data current.
- Topic Popularity with Who Visited This Topic: This extension, available for phpBB 4.0.x boards, takes topic engagement to the next level. Instead of just a view counter, you see who has actually visited a topic and when. This is fantastic for:
- Measuring true interest: You can see if key members or staff have viewed important announcements.
- Encouraging participation: When users see others have visited, it can subtly encourage them to post a reply.
- Customizing display: Under ACP → Extensions → Who Visited This Topic / Settings, you can configure Set value for Who Visited This Topic in topics to show just the last few visitors or a more comprehensive list. I always enable Enable Who Visited This Topic avatars in topics to make it more visually appealing and personal.
- Privacy and control: The Exclude members in viewtopic option is handy if you need to hide certain users from the list for any reason.
What's your take? Do you find these kinds of activity insights helpful, or do you prefer to keep user activity less visible on your board?
